All About Shali

I was born and raised in Queens, New York City, the daughter of immigrants from Mumbai, India. My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation of the importance of education. I am a proud graduate of the K-12 public school system in NYC, having gone to my local elementary and junior high schools, and then attending a public specialized high school (Stuyvesant High School, in Manhattan).

I went on to receive my Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Barnard College in 1995, and my Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in 1998. My MPH focused on Community Health and Development, and strongly emphasized the technical skills of program design/development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, irrespective of the content area. Thus, I am committed to making sure that whatever programs I undertake are meeting their objectives, and all program design takes the community’s needs into consideration first and foremost.

I have demonstrated a proven commitment to serving the community however I can. When I took time off to raise my daughter, I kept my skills sharp by volunteering to run school-wide and community-wide programs. Volunteering has allowed me to gain a diverse array of experiences in a variety of disciplines, while underscoring the need for meticulous organization, clear communication, and a quick turnaround and responsiveness rate.

Communities have their unique strengths and challenges, and having a background in cultural anthropology, along with a Masters degree focusing on community health, has given me the sensibility and sensitivity of keeping the individual, their families, and communities at the forefront of any discussion, which in turn informs how I interact with people and how I can best serve them.
